The Best of French in the City in November

Events:

On November 2nd, book your seat for a wonderful tour of the French wines with a few cheese pairings, at the French Bistro and Bar à Vin at AOC.Other dates available.

On November 13th and 27th the NYC French social group will host another French Language Happy Hour at Habanero Blues. This month again the cooking studio Miette will offer a variety of French cooking classes. On Nov 16th, why not learn how to cook a full provençal menu


Movies and theater.

The French cinema week is coming to NYC, it will take place from November 12th to 14th. A selection of films and Premieres curated by the Festival du Film Francophone d’Angoulême –the second largest film festival in France. To see the full programmation click here. From November 6th to December 17th, the Fi:af presents Chalotte Forever: Gainsbourg on Film.

On November 13th The Cocktail Français welcomes back Sylvain Beltran-Lamy, author, actor and director of his latest play, « Tchekhov Forever ». The play will be presented in French.

On November 19th, La Maison Française of Columbia will show Les Maîtres Fous, a ethnofiction” made in 1955 by French ethnologist and filmmaker Jean Rouch, about ritual practices associated with trance and possession among the Haukas in Niger.


Books:

For 3 days, Festival Albertine 2019, curated by environmentalist and author Bill McKibben, will take on climate change. For three days, leading thinkers, politicians, activists, artists, and authors will come together to discuss the urgency to act, environmental justice, local policy, the food we eat and produce, and how to motivate people to change their ways. Nov 8th-10th.

The Dekalb branch of the Brooklyn Public Library host some "French Story time" on Nov 7th, 14th and 21st, from 4-5pm. Starting on Nov 4th, La Maison Française of NYU presents presents his series on contemporary writing in French, "Machine à écrire"


Art:

On view at the Brooklyn Museum, until May 3rd 2020, JR: Chronicles is the first major exhibition in North America of works by the French-born artist. Working at the intersections of photography, social engagement, and street art, JR collaborates with communities by taking individual portraits, reproducing them at a monumental scale, and wheat pasting them—sometimes illegally—in nearby public spaces.


Music:

The club Bonafide will presents French Jazz and Tango on Nov 2nd and on Nov 3rd Jazz-influenced French indie singer/songwriter Violette will sing a blend of American Jazz, French chanson and pop music. On November 16th, The Blaze, the French house duo, known for their highly emotional music will play at The Good Room. On November 21st, Guitarist Stephane Wrembel, best known for writing the theme song for the Grammy-winning soundtrack to Woody Allen’s 2011 Oscar-winning film Midnight in Paris, and acclaimed for his innovative musical interpretations of Gypsy legend Django Reinhardt, makes his debut with the North American premiere of Django L’Impressionniste. The concert celebrates the release of his new record featuring 17 meditative solo works by Reinhardt influenced by Ravel and Debussy. From November 19-23, the French Jazz singer Cyrille Aimée will be in concert at Birdland Jazz club. Birdland Jazz club will also host Margot Sergent for a Piaf the Piaf Experience a Parisian Cabaret Revival. If you're nostalgic of the 90's music, the Knitting Factory presents Daft Disko, French Touch and Disco House. Nov 23rd.
